Final Results

Economic and Ecologic Impacts Associated With Wood Chip Production in North Carolina

The final study results are now available for public view in PDF format.

The documents presented here are final reports. The study has been conducted as an integrated assessment of economic, ecological, and social issues of relevance to chip mills. Over the course of the study, ten topic areas have emerged as organizing themes within the research. White Papers have been written by members of the study team to provide additional detail in each topic area. Readers wishing greater detail than the limited discussion possible in the Executive Summary and Project Summary should consult the individual White Papers.

Forest Management Effects on Water Quality

The following scientific papers form a Second list of sources that are being evaluated in a literature review of forest management effects on soils and water quality in North Carolina. Most of the references pertain directly to forest conditions in the southeastern USA. This list is being expanded and additions and suggests are welcome.

Funding and Budget

This study will be an interdisciplinary team effort that will involve scientists at several institutions and organizations. This study will provide $250,000 to the Southern Center for Sustainable Forests, which in turn will provide funds to the two cooperating institutions of North Carolina State University and Duke University. The funds designated for Duke University will focus on the ecologic assessment, and be administered by Daniel Richter. The funds provided to NCSU will focus mostly on the economic components of the study, and be administered by Fred Cubbage. Each institution will receive $125,000, and Cubbage and Richter will cooperate to ensure that adequate funds are available to fund the relevant components of the study as required. NCSU and Duke will cooperate throughout the study, and both economists and ecologists from both institutions, and other organizations, will participate in the study. If funds for different scientists need to be adjusted, this can be done through subcontracts at either institution.
